As a Necromancer in Diablo 4, commanding the forces of the underworld is your birthright-and few allies are as fearsome or reliable as the golem. This towering, hulking minion acts as a unstoppable tank, a damage dealer, or a defensive bulwark, depending on your playstyle. Unlike skeletal warriors or mages, summoning a golem is not a basic skill you unlock at level 1; it requires patience, progression, and mastery of the Diablo 4 Items Necromancer's unique class mechanic: the Book of the Dead.
Whether you're a new Necromancer just starting your journey through Sanctuary or a seasoned player looking to optimize your golem strategy, this guide will walk you through every step of unlocking, summoning, and customizing your golem. From reaching the required level to completing the pivotal quest and fine-tuning your build, we'll cover everything you need to know to make this powerful minion your most trusted companion in battle.
Step 1: Reach Level 25 and Unlock the "Call of the Underworld" Quest
The first barrier to summoning a golem is reaching level 25 as a Necromancer. This is not an arbitrary requirement-golems are the most powerful minions in the Necromancer's arsenal, and Blizzard designed them to be a mid-game unlock to reward progression.
While leveling from 1 to 25, focus on mastering your core Necromancer skills. Use skeletal warriors to tank damage, skeletal mages to deal ranged damage, and abilities like Corpse Explosion or Bone Spear to clear groups of enemies efficiently. This will not only speed up your leveling process but also prepare you for the quest that unlocks your golem.
Once you hit level 25, a priority quest titled "Call of the Underworld" will automatically appear in your quest log. This quest is your ticket to unlocking the golem, and it cannot be skipped if you want to summon this minion. It will guide you to Sarkova Pass, located in the Fractured Peaks region-your first stop on the path to commanding a golem.
Step 2: Complete the "Call of the Underworld" Quest
The "Call of the Underworld" quest is a multi-step challenge that tests your prowess as a Necromancer. To start, fast-travel to the Menestad waypoint in the Fractured Peaks and head northwest to find a mysterious statue. Interacting with this statue will summon Maltorius, a spectral figure who serves as your guide and judge.
Maltorius's first task is simple but time-consuming: collect 12 Unbroken Bones from undead enemies in the area. These enemies include skeleton archers, warriors, and wraiths, and the bones drop randomly. To speed up this grind, use area-of-effect (AOE) skills like Corpse Explosion or Bone Spear to mow down groups of undead-this increases your chances of getting the bones you need.
Once you've gathered all 12 Unbroken Bones, return to Maltorius. He will direct you to Bitter Pass, a cave south of the statue and west of Menestad. Enter the cave and fight your way through waves of enemies to reach the ritual site, where you'll find the Jar of Souls.
Interacting with the Jar of Souls triggers a ritual: you must fill the jar with enemy souls by defeating multiple waves of foes, including elite mobs with high health pools. Use crowd-control skills like Decrepify or Corpse Tendrils to manage the hordes, and let your skeletal minions tank damage while you deal damage from a safe distance.
After filling the Jar of Souls, Maltorius will reappear to complete the ritual. Congratulations-you have officially unlocked the golem in your Book of the Dead. You are now ready to summon your first golem and harness its power.
Step 3: Access the Book of the Dead and Customize Your Golem
Unlike other Necromancer skills, the golem is not found in the standard skill tree. Instead, it is managed through the Book of the Dead-a unique class mechanic that unlocks at level 5 and allows you to cheap Diablo 4 materials customize all your undead minions.
To open the Book of the Dead, press Shift + C on your keyboard (or use the appropriate tab in the character menu on consoles). Here, you'll find three categories: Skeletal Warriors, Skeletal Mages, and Golems. Select the Golems tab to see your available options.
At level 25, you'll unlock the Bone Golem-the first of three golem types. As you progress further, you'll unlock two more: the Blood Golem at level 28 and the Iron Golem at level 32. Each type has distinct abilities and playstyles, so choose the one that best fits your build.
